Music at SCS

We offer a full range of musical ECAs. Several choirs, orchestra, guitar group and drumming are just a few on offer. One of the main highlights of the year for Year 5 and 6 students is the School Musical, where students showcase their musical, dance and acting talents.

Students have many performing opportunities throughout the year which vary from class performances, assembly performances and large showcase concerts.

In the Foundation stage, engaging music lessons support children’s imagination and creativity through listening games, singing, movement and music making. Children explore a wide range of percussion instruments and build a repertoire of songs throughout the year, with opportunities to perform in class and on stage.

The Primary Music department at Safa Community School is buzzing with excitement and activity. The four members of full time staff all offer their own varied expertise and experience. The music team work together closely to ensure smooth transitions and progress throughout the curriculum. The music lessons are practical and fun, often leading to performance opportunities.

In year 1 and 2, children have the opportunity to play both tuned and untuned percussion. They sing songs in a variety of styles and begin to learn basic rhythms and note reading from the stave. They explore African instruments and work hard for their winter showcase concerts.

In year 3 and 4, the children continue to expand on their singing and vocal technique, and are able to explore a wide range of songs. They begin singing in harmony and understanding how the different parts fit together. They enjoy learning music theory through a variety of instruments including recorder, xylophones and djembe drums. They are excited to perform and showcase their work.

In Year 5 and 6 students listen to, compose and perform music from a diverse range of genres, styles, traditions and contexts. They learn to play the ukulele and explore many other string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments throughout the year. Students develop their aural skills by identifying rhythm, pitch, dynamics and expression, form and structure, timbre and texture in music. They sing a broad range of songs with many opportunities to play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts.
